POKOTABI / LYFE
LYFE
Explore LYFE in Kanda-Nishikicho, known for made-to-order donabe rice with salmon and ikura, meaty shumai dumplings, and filling lunch sets in a spacious room.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Steaming donabe clay pots, cooked from scratch upon each order, take center stage across the tables at LYFE. Using domestic Koshihikari rice, the kitchen builds fragrant compositions such as silver salmon with glistening salmon roe, oysters with seasonal mushrooms, or thinly sliced wagyu cooked sukiyaki style. Lifting the heavy earthenware lid unleashes a fragrant billow of steam. Because the clay pots require at least 20 minutes to cook through, lingering over appetizers and a drink while watching the pot simmer becomes part of the evening ritual.
Beyond the rice dishes, the savory small plates display similar care. The signature Lyfe Shumai dumplings feature coarsely chopped onion to highlight the rich bite of seasoned meat, served with house-made miso dipping sauce, sesame ponzu, and soy sauce so guests can flavor them to taste. Another fixture is the roast bone-in chicken, marinated with garlic and spices before a high-heat oven roast leaves the skin crisp and the meat dripping with juices. To drink, traditional beers and wines share space with twists like Motoyama matcha highballs from Shizuoka, apple black tea highballs, and overflowing pours of sparkling wine.
At midday, the dining room draws local workers for generous set meals that pair white or fifteen-grain rice with miso soup, three small side dishes, and a drink. Options span crisp homemade chicken karaage and limited-quantity salmon with ikura to slow-simmered beef tendon curry. Inside, polished concrete mixes with warm wood accents, leaving comfortable breathing room between counter stools and larger group tables. Dinner services frequently fill up, so reserving ahead is the easiest way to ensure a table when planning around the clay-pot specialties.
